Living in the Flesh (Carnally Minded)

Living in the Flesh (Carnally Minded)

Many choose to go about their everyday business saying, “I can do as I please and I don’t care what you say about it.” Christ did not save man to live life as a heathen.  Christians should be set apart and appear different from the world.  I know that I will not cover everything in great detail. When a person’s actions seem ungodly, they defend things ungodly, use sarcasm to get a point across, beware. There a wolves in sheep’s clothing that will try to lead the believer in Christ away from the truth. So to begin, if I had to define what a “carnal” man was, I would look at the definition of the word and then the qualities of the carnal man.

  1. A carnal man is usually a “new babe” in Christ.  1 Corinthians 3:1, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.”
  2. Or one who receives Christ but his fruit does not show it. His character is usually the opposite of the spiritual man and he is therefore living in the flesh.

Qualities of a Carnal Man

  1. Jealous – envious of others and what they have, including their accomplishments.
  2. Prideful – arrogant of self and accomplishments
  3. Double-Minded (Two Faced)- says one thing and does another
  4. Gossiper- talks from person to person and causing strife
  5. Trouble-maker- looking for something to stir up trouble among others or looking for something to gossip about.
  6. Un-compassionate- non caring about the feelings of others
  7. Worldly- cares more for the things of the world instead of God.  Worries about pleasing man instead of God.
  8. Fleshly-minded- worries more about self and things that will please his flesh.
  9. Self-willed- does things he wants to do without listening to the advice of others.
  10. Lustful- looks on things that he shouldn’t including money, opposite sex or worldly things.
  11. Boastful- arrogant and toots his own horn. (similar to prideful)
  12. Forward (Outspoken) -lacks humility and often speaks out when he should be silent.

Let’s look at the Scriptures and see how they define what Carnal means.

  • James 1:8  A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
  • Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
  •  Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting
  • Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
  • 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
  • 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • Proverbs 16:28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

About Tracy K

I am a born again believer who has taught Sunday School, Women's Meetings and written blogs and books for the purpose of the ministry. My sole purpose is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe Jesus, the son of God, died on a cross for the sins of the whole world. I believe he arose after three days and now sits on the right side of God in Heaven. I believe Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. Without Jesus, there is no remissions of sins:
