Jesus told his disciples many times that they could ask for things and God would give it to them. He said they have not because they ask not (James 4:2). He loves us and he wants to give us the desires of our heart. The Bible tells us that if we “Delight thyself also in the Lord: he shall give thee the desires of thine heart (Psalm 37:4). The Lord wants us to desire things above and not things of the earth. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” 1 Corinthians 14:1 said that we should desire spiritual gifts.
Jesus said to his disciples in John 16:23-26, “And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:”
Matthew Chapter 7:7-11 says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
John 15:16-Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Matthew 6:8-Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
John 16:24-Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
