Riches- All is Vanity

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36) What purpose is it to receive great riches on this earth for one day to die with nothing. “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (Timothy 6:7).

One of the wisest men that ever lived was King Solomon. He said “There is nothing better for a man, than for a man to make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God” (Ecclesiastes 2:24). He had riches, wealth and a beautiful kingdom but said, All is Vanity. He knew that laboring for riches was vanity. He knew that the only purpose for his life was to serve God, because all was from God.

God gave Solomon wealth and everything that a man would desire, but Solomon said, “I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God (Ecclesiastes 3:12,13).

The older you get, the more you come to realize that one day there is going to be a time that you will die. What are you working for on this earth? There is a time appointed by God for all men to die. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”(Hebrews 9:27). Then God will judge the righteous and sinners for their work here on this earth. Ecclesiastes 3:17- I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. Those that work for riches and wealth are not fulfilling God’s purpose. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (Romans 6:16)

God wants us to realize that he has given us all these things to enjoy, but he is the creator of all these things.  We cannot honor riches and wealth and serve sin, but we must honor and serve God.  He wants us to love him and accept his son as our Savior.  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
